Monday, June 10, 2013 at Bar Boulud, New York, New York

On Monday, June 10, at Bar Boulud in New York City, we continued our series on the Early Greats of Côte Rôtie & Cornas with a dinner focusing on Georges and Robert Jasmin, with wines dating back to 1978.

This was the third of five remarkable evenings, each featuring a different legend of the Northern Rhône. The first two dinners, on April 3 and April 17, were homages to Noël Verset and Joseph Jamet. Subsequent dinners this fall will feature Auguste Clape and Marius Gentaz.

We have collected the Côte Rôties of Georges and Robert Jasmin for more than 20 years and, for this unique event, assembled a remarkable line-up that included several vintages in magnum. Here’s what was paired with the cuisine of Bar Boulud’s Executive Chef, Olivier Quignon.

Côte Rôtie
1978, 1979, 1982, 1983, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1994, 1995, 1998, 1999

Our co-host for the evening was Wine Director Michael Madrigale.

Georges & Robert Jasmin

Beginning in 1935, two generations of Jasmins built one of the great Northern Rhône wine dynasties, which lasted until Robert died in a tragic car accident in 1999. Stylistically, father and son’s wines were the Côte Rôtie parallel to those of Verset. Supremely elegant and profoundly old school, just one Côte Rôtie was made, a blend of lieux-dits that always included some Viognier.

The Jasmins’ whole-cluster methods were consistent from generation to generation; Robert once said, “I do things just as grandfather did them.”

Robert’s son Patrick took over on his father's death and has been the domaine's winemaker since 1999. We chose to conclude our tasting with that watershed vintage.
